thank you for the comment but to read between the lines you have just said the same thing in a different way. esteem is to estimate; and respect is to accept the estimate. when it comes to the self I'm at a loss because my opinion of the self depends on others who are examples around or thoughts of my potential eg who decides the value of the look of my hair? is it my friend or my thoughts ? im sorry if im too verbal but i hope you are getting my point.

Hi,
Whilst some people use the terms interchangeably, I believe there are significant differences in their meanings.
To esteem something is to evaluate it and conclude that it is worthy. To respect something is to accept it's worth without the need for evaluation.
To relate this to people: self-respect is not contingent on success. Those with self-respect 'like' or 'accept' themselves because of who they are, not as a result of positive evaluation, either by themselves or by others.
Your self-respect cannot be lifted by comparing oneself with others, or by receiving their compliments. It is an internal acceptance. Self-esteem, on the other hand, is more changeable and more affected by the world and people around you.
Imagine you failed an exam you'd worked really hard for: it would lower your self-esteem, but it would not change your self-respect. If a friend of yours said your hair looked great today, it would also affect your self-esteem, but would not change your self-respect.
I am not suggesting, by the way, that self-respect cannot change or be affected by things that happen to you. It is, however, more of a permanent and internal concept than self-esteem and I hope my thoughts have been able to make a coherent distinction.
